Coats, running styles and aptitudes, explained

Horse girls inherit the name of a racehorse, and the horse's coat usually decides the girl's hair. The running style decides how she races and the distance decides which races she can win. Pick one of each and your OC already has a career plan.

Chestnut coat example

Chestnut coat

A chestnut horse has a reddish-gold coat with no black on the mane, tail or legs. In the franchise chestnuts tend to become redheads or copper-haired girls: Daiwa Scarlet, Mayano Top Gun and T.M. Opera O all have chestnut namesakes.

Bay coat example

Bay coat

Bay is a brown coat with a black mane, tail and lower legs, and dark bay is a deeper shade of it. Most bay and dark bay horse girls have brown hair, like Special Week and Vodka, though a few, such as Kitasan Black, go all the way to black.

Grey coat example

Grey coat

Grey horses start with a darker base coat and get whiter with age, until some turn pure white. Grey namesakes give the franchise its silver-haired girls: Oguri Cap, Gold Ship and Tamamo Cross were all greys, and Oguri Cap's spin-off manga is called Cinderella Gray.

Black coat example

Black coat

A true black coat, black from body to tail, is relatively rare among Thoroughbreds according to the JRA. Black and near-black namesakes such as Verxina and Manhattan Cafe became black-haired girls, which makes a jet-black OC stand out in any lineup.

White coat example

White coat

White is the eighth coat on the JRA list, and the JRA notes it is still not fully understood in Thoroughbreds. White horses are born mostly white, which is how you tell them from greys, and they are not albinos: their eyes keep their color. Give a white-coat OC dark eyes to match.

Running styles

Every horse girl races in one of four styles. Front Runners (nige) grab the lead from the gate, Pace Chasers (senkō) sit just behind the leaders, Late Surgers (sashi) wait in the middle of the pack and move on the final corner, and End Closers (oikomi) start at the back and charge the final straight.

Distance and track

Races come in four distances: Sprint (up to 1,400 m), Mile (1,600 to 1,800 m), Medium (about 2,000 to 2,400 m) and Long (2,500 m and up), run on turf or dirt. Each horse girl has a letter grade from G to S for every distance and surface, so a turf stayer can be hopeless in a dirt sprint.

Ear ornaments

Horse girls wear a ribbon or ornament on one ear, or a hat tilted toward one ear, and the side is a clue about her namesake: the right ear means the real horse was a stallion, the left ear means a mare. An OC has no namesake, so choose the side that fits the horse you imagine behind her name.

Names and skills

Name your horse girl, pick a signature skill

Canon horse girls carry the names of real racehorses, so an OC needs a name of her own that still sounds like one. Mix a racehorse-style name from two words, then pick a signature skill for the final stretch. Every click goes straight onto your horse girl in the generator.

Guide

How to make an Uma Musume OC

Whether you call her an Uma Musume OC or an Umamusume OC, a strong horse girl comes down to five decisions. The Uma Musume OC maker handles the drawing; these are worth making first.

  1. 1

    Start from the coat

The coat sets her hair: chestnut for copper and red, bay for brown, grey for silver, black for jet black, white for snow white. Canon designs also turn a horse's face marking into hair, like the white star streak in Sirius Symboli's bangs, so add a star or a stripe in Extra details if you want one.

  2. 2

Pair a running style with a distance

A Front Runner sprinter and an End Closer stayer race in completely different ways. Pick the pair that fits her temper, an impatient girl up front or a patient one at the back, and give her one distance she is bad at so a race against her stays interesting.

  3. 3

Decide who she is named after

In the lore, horse girls inherit the names and souls of racehorses from another world, and the ear ornament side matches that horse. Imagine the horse behind your OC, stallion or mare, sprinter or stayer, and let it choose the ear and the style of her name.

  4. 4

Build the racing outfit around one theme

Every canon racing outfit has a theme you can read at a glance: Agnes Tachyon races in a lab coat, Mayano Top Gun in a bomber jacket, El Condor Pasa in a masquerade mask. Pick one theme of your own, set an outfit color and a trim color, and make sure it would look good on the Winning Live stage too.

  5. 5

Give her a rival and a dream race

The series runs on rivalries, like Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond in the third anime season. Name a rival, pick the big race she dreams of winning, such as the Japan Cup or the Arima Kinen, and write one line on why it matters to her.
