Weirdcore, dreamcore and other cores, explained

These are internet aesthetics, not a series, so there is no canon to match. The core style sets the feeling and the motifs carry it: pick one style, then two or three motifs, and the OC reads at a glance.

Weirdcore example

Weirdcore

Weirdcore took off in the early 2020s on Tumblr and Reddit. It borrows the look of images shared online from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s: low-quality photos, amateur edits, eyes in odd places and objects where they do not belong, often in empty, familiar places like classrooms and malls. Aesthetics Wiki notes it aims for confusion and strange nostalgia, and is not rooted in horror.

Dreamcore

Dreamcore grew in the late 2010s and early 2020s and leans on dreams: hazy, bright settings, clouds, rainbows, long corridors and skies where a floor should be. Where weirdcore aims for confusion, dreamcore aims for comfort and familiarity. It is the side of the scene that turned into original characters, with fans on TikTok and Picsart making object-headed OCs and angels covered in eyes.

Kidcore

Kidcore celebrates a 1990s and early-2000s childhood: red, yellow and blue, rainbows, checkerboards, smiley faces, toys and stickers. The term goes back to the early 2010s, and the trend took off in late 2020. Paired with a dreamcore head or an empty playground, it gives a cheerful OC with one thing slightly off.

Webcore

Webcore reuses the early web of roughly 1995 to 2005: pixel art, glitter GIFs, pop-up windows, error boxes, old desktop interfaces and the sound of dial-up. The surreal web series ENA made the look popular in 2020. Wear the cursors and windows as costume pieces so your OC still reads as a person.

Liminal space example

Liminal space

Liminal spaces are places you pass through, like hallways, malls, pools and stairwells, shown with nobody in them. The look spread in 2019 alongside the Backrooms, a 4chan story about endless yellow rooms, and spiked in March 2020 when lockdowns emptied real public spaces. A liminal OC is the one person still there.

Object heads

Many dreamcore OCs swap the head for an object: a cardboard cutout mask, a cloud, a TV, a flower. It is the fastest way to make a character read as weirdcore at a glance. Pick one object, keep the outfit ordinary, and let the head do the talking.

Cloudcore

Cloudcore centers on clouds and open skies: golden-hour cumulus, pastel filters and sparkle edits. It became a named aesthetic around 2019 to 2022 through Pinterest boards and TikTok wallpaper accounts, and it sits right next to dreamcore. A cloud motif and a sky background push any OC toward the soft side.

Guide

How to make a weirdcore OC

A good weirdcore OC or dreamcore OC is one familiar thing made slightly wrong. This weirdcore OC creator handles the drawing; these five decisions are worth making first.

  1. 1

Choose the feeling: weirdcore or dreamcore

Decide whether your OC should feel off or feel safe. Weirdcore leans on confusion and lo-fi strangeness; dreamcore leans on comfort, haze and bright skies. Kidcore, webcore and liminal looks mix with either one.

  2. 2

    Make one familiar thing wrong

The aesthetic works by putting ordinary things where they do not belong. Swap the head for a cloud or an old TV, dot a cardigan with tiny eyes, or line a raincoat with a daytime sky. One change reads better than five.

  3. 3

Keep to two or three motifs

Eyes, clouds, checkerboards, rainbows and loading icons are the classics. Pick two or three and repeat them across the outfit and the setting, so the OC stays readable at profile-picture size.

  4. 4

    Put them somewhere empty

Liminal places carry half the mood: a mall at 3 AM, the yellow Backrooms, a pool with no windows, a playground at dusk. Match the colors to the place: greys and beiges for weirdcore, pastels or kidcore primaries for dreamcore.

  5. 5

    Give them a quiet story

Write one line about what they are waiting for or looking for, like a door that is not there or a store that closed years ago. Keep cryptic phrases as objects, such as a folded note, since the generator leaves text out of the art.
