Hedgehog example

Hedgehog

The series' own species: Sonic, Shadow, Silver and Amy Rose are all hedgehogs. It is the most popular pick and the hardest to make unique, so change the quill shape and the shoes, not only the colors.

Fox example

Fox

Tails is the canon fox: a two-tailed mechanic who flies by spinning his tails like a helicopter rotor. Fox OCs make good inventors, pilots and tricksters. Give yours one tail so it does not read as Tails.

Echidna

Knuckles guards the Master Emerald on Angel Island, glides on his dreadlocks and smashes boulders with his fists. Echidna OCs suit guardians, treasure hunters and members of the ancient echidna clan, like Tikal from Sonic Adventure.

Rouge, a treasure hunter and part-time government spy, debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and plays the Flight role for Team Dark in Sonic Heroes. Bats fly on their own wings, so they suit night workers, spies and thieves.

Cat example

Cat

Cats range from Blaze, a princess from another dimension who controls fire, to Big, a strong and gentle cat who goes fishing with his frog Froggy. Cat is also one of the seven avatar species in Sonic Forces.

Wolf example

Wolf

Wolf is one of the seven avatar species in Sonic Forces (2017), and the IDW comics built Whisper the Wolf from one of those avatar designs. Wolves suit loners, mercenaries and fiercely loyal teammates.

Robot example

Robot

Dr. Eggman's badniks are robots with animals trapped inside, and destroying one sets the animal free. A robot OC can be a badnik, a rival built to copy a hero like Metal Sonic, or a machine that turned on its maker, like E-123 Omega.

Guide

How to make a Sonic OC

Whether you use this Sonic the Hedgehog OC maker or draw by hand, a fan character that stands out comes down to five decisions. The generator handles the drawing; these are worth making first.

  1. 1

Pick a species, then a type

The species tells fans who your OC might know, and the Speed, Flight or Power type from Sonic Heroes tells them how your OC moves. A Flight-type fox and a Power-type echidna play very differently.

  2. 2

Build the silhouette from quills, ears, gloves and shoes

Sonic characters read from their outline: the spines or ears on the head, big gloves and oversized shoes. Give your OC one shape no canon character has, like swept-back quills with a curl or ears that fold down.

  3. 3

Keep the palette to two or three colors

One fur color, one muzzle or chest color and a shoe color that pops is how the main cast is designed. Skip blue with red shoes or black with red stripes, because fans will see Sonic or Shadow first.

  4. 4

Give them one ability with a limit

Each canon character has one clear thing: Tails flies, Knuckles glides and punches, Rouge flies and kicks. One ability with a cost, like a dash that overheats, says more than a list of powers.

  5. 5

Name them, then give them a place

Most of the cast go by a first name plus their species, like Rouge the Bat. Then decide where your OC lives (Green Hill, Station Square, Angel Island) and how they know Sonic: friend, rival or one of Eggman's recruits.
