Lightners, Darkners and Dark Worlds, explained

A Dark Fountain gives form to a Dark World inside a Light World space. An object there can become a Darkner, so the room and its contents are the best starting point for a new character.

Lightner example

Lightner

Lightners live in the Light World. Hometown is the town we explore, and its residents can enter Dark Worlds. Give your new Lightner an ordinary daily routine before choosing what changes in a Dark World.

Lamp Darkner example

Lamp Darkner

A Darkner can be shaped by an object in the room where a Fountain appears. A desk lamp suggests a hinged arm, a downward shade and a warm bulb. Make those parts visible before adding clothes so the source object reads at thumbnail size. A face and a personal worry then make the design more than a prop.

Paper Darkner

Folded paper can become a collar, fan or folding arm. Use the object as one clear design rule. Leave space for a face and readable outfit rather than turning the character into a busy prop.

Music Darkner

A metronome, instrument case or old music stand can inspire a Darkner. Give the character a rhythm habit or a place in a band, then choose a flaw beyond simply being musical.

Kitchen Darkner example

Kitchen Darkner

A cake tin makes a strong silhouette in a kitchen themed world. Its shape can guide the clothes while its job, friendship and worry make it a person.

Toy Darkner example

Toy Darkner

A toy room can suggest wind-up bodies, fabric landscapes and simple movement rules. A spool could roll quickly but stop when its spring unwinds. Give the toy a visible face so an expression carries across a tiny sprite, and keep the silhouette original rather than copying a familiar chapter character.

Dark Fountain

Each Dark Fountain gives form to a localized Dark World. Card Kingdom belongs to a classroom, Cyber World to a computer lab, TV World to a living room, the Dark Sanctuaries to the church, and the chapter 5 flower shop world is often called Flower Kingdom by fans. Chapters 1 through 5 are out as of October 2026.

Guide

How to make a Deltarune OC

Deltarune character creation starts with a place and a small idea. These five steps keep the result readable in a tiny game portrait.

  1. 1

    Choose Lightner or Darkner

A Hometown Lightner needs an ordinary life. A Darkner needs an object source. Decide which story you want before making the costume. For a Lightner, write one everyday habit that would still matter after crossing into a Dark World. For a Darkner, name the physical object and the room it came from.

  2. 2

Pick the room and Dark World

Tie a Darkner to a room that could hold its source object. Use a known chapter world or invent a small original room and Fountain without claiming it is canon. A metronome makes sense near a stage or music shelf; a cake tin belongs near a kitchen. The setting should explain one detail of the outfit or job.

  3. 3

    Build one strong silhouette

Turn one object feature into a head, collar, coat or limb. Keep the shape clear at sprite scale and choose two main colors. Sketch the character as a solid shadow: if the silhouette no longer suggests its object, enlarge one identifying part. Keep the face visible and avoid hiding it in a dark cavity.

  4. 4

Give the object a human problem

A lamp may fear dark corners. A metronome may lose the beat. A flaw gives a simple design a reason to join a party. Pair a useful talent with a small limit that can create a scene, then write how a friend responds. That is more playable than giving the OC a long list of powers.

  5. 5

Try a sprite or a sheet

Use the pixel home style for a game-like portrait. A Deltarune sprite maker often gives a tiny fixed base; this generator draws a fresh character. Choose Ref sheet to compare views. Check the object source, palette and face on every view. If the side view loses the object shape, simplify the outfit before adding more decoration.
