Ideas
Need a trainer idea? Load one of these into the Pokémon trainer OC creator, then change the class, the region or the partner until the character feels like yours.

Know the rules
The class decides what your trainer does all day, and the dream decides where the story is headed. Pick one of each and the rest of the character falls into place.

Most games start the same way: the region's Professor hands a new trainer a first partner, usually a choice of Grass, Fire or Water, and sends them on a journey. A trainer carries up to six Pokémon at once, and the rest wait in a PC box. Most regions have eight Gyms between a rookie and the League.

Polished teens and young adults who travel to take on League competitions. The games called them Cooltrainers through Generation III. You meet most of them late in the story, often on Victory Road, with fully evolved, well-balanced teams and healing items in their bags.

A Gym Leader tests challengers and gives the Gym Badge to anyone who wins. Each one specializes in one type and builds the Gym around it, like a swimming pool for Water or ice and snow for Ice. Eight badges open the Elite Four and the Champion; Alola swaps Gyms for island trials.

Rangers joined the trainer classes in Generation III, in sturdy orange-and-black gear with a length of rope, and they look after wild Pokémon and lost travelers. In the Pokémon Ranger spin-off games they skip Poké Balls: they calm wild Pokémon with a Capture Styler and keep one Partner Pokémon at their side.

Most regions have a villainous team, usually named Team plus one word, like Team Rocket, Team Galactic or Team Skull. They run on a ladder: a boss at the top, a few Admins, and a crowd of grunts in matching uniforms who meet the hero early and often. A grunt OC needs a team, a uniform and a reason they joined.
Coordinators raise Pokémon for Contests instead of battles. Contests began in Hoenn with five categories: Cool, Beauty, Cute, Clever and Tough. In the anime, a Coordinator who wins five Ribbons can enter the Grand Festival and try for the title of Top Coordinator. Kalos has its own anime stage event, the Pokémon Showcase.
A trainer class since Generation III, often found near a Pokémon Day Care, raising lots of different Pokémon. The best-known Breeder is Brock, who traveled with Ash to improve his breeding skills before deciding to study as a Pokémon Doctor. A Breeder OC is the team's caretaker.
Each region has a Professor who studies Pokémon and gives new trainers their first partner and a Pokédex. From Kanto to Galar, the region's Professor is named after a tree: Oak, Elm, Birch, Rowan, Juniper, Sycamore, Kukui and Magnolia. Paldea's Sada and Turo broke the pattern.
Names and partners
Player characters in the games go by a first name, and a few anime trainers, like Ash Ketchum, add a family name. Mix a first name and a family name, then pick a partner. Every click goes straight onto your trainer in the generator.

Pick an original fakemon partner, or type any Pokémon in the Partner Pokémon box.
Guide
To create your own Pokémon trainer who feels like they belong in the games, make five decisions first. The generator does the drawing; these are what make the design yours.
A rookie chasing eight badges, a Gym Leader guarding one, a Ranger who protects wild Pokémon and a grunt following orders live very different stories. Pick the class first, then a dream that pulls against it, like a grunt who secretly wants to win Contests.
Every region is based on a real place: Alola on Hawaii, Kalos on France, Galar on Great Britain, Sinnoh on Hokkaido. A trainer from snowy Sinnoh packs a scarf, and one from Alola travels light. Pick a Home region and the outfit gets a reason.
Gym Leaders and the Elite Four build their teams around one type, so a Specialty type makes your trainer read as a pro. Rookies usually carry a mixed team. If you pick a type, echo it once in the outfit, like snowflake trim for Ice, instead of everywhere.
Two colors and one signature item read best: a bucket hat, a rope belt, a stage sash. Stay away from famous silhouettes, like a red-and-white cap with a blue vest, a white beanie over long navy hair, a long black coat with fur trim or a cape covered in sponsor patches.
A trainer is half of a pair. Type any Pokémon in Partner Pokémon, or build a fakemon in the Pokémon OC creator and bring it here. Write one line on how they met; it tells you how they stand next to each other in the art.
