Visual D&D Character Creator

This free DnD character art creator draws the part of your character that a rules builder leaves blank: how they look. Pick a species (the 2024 rules' word for race), a class and an origin, set skin and outfit colors, add a signature item or spell, and get a painted picture of your adventurer. It is not a stat-sheet builder like D&D Beyond, so pair the two: build the numbers there, draw the face here.

D&D species, explained

Species is the choice a D&D character art creator has to get right first: ears, horns, tails, tusks and height are what people read before they notice the gear. It is the 2024 Player's Handbook word for what older books called race. These are the seven in the picker.

Human example

Human

As diverse in appearance as the people of Earth, so the look is all yours: build, skin, hair and scars come from your choices. In the 2024 rules humans are Resourceful, Skillful and Versatile, and they can be Medium or Small.

any lookMedium or SmallHeroic Inspiration
Elf example

Elf

Pointed ears, no facial or body hair, and a life of around 750 years. The 2024 rules offer three elven lineages, drow, high elf and wood elf; name yours in Extra details. Elves trance for four hours instead of sleeping.

pointed ears3 lineagesTrance
Dwarf example

Dwarf

Squat and often bearded, 4 to 5 feet tall, living about 350 years. Dwarves see in the dark out to 120 feet and sense movement through stone, so they read best with a broad stance and well-kept gear.

Halfling example

Halfling

Small folk about 2 to 3 feet tall, brave and famously lucky: a halfling who rolls a 1 on a D20 Test can reroll it. Put a door frame or a tankard in the scene and the size reads at once.

2 to 3 feetLuckNaturally Stealthy
Orc example

Orc

Tall and broad at 6 to 7 feet, with gray skin, sharply pointed ears and lower canines like small tusks in the 2024 rules. Older art often showed green skin; set either one in Skin or scales. Adrenaline Rush and Relentless Endurance make orcs hard to stop.

Tiefling example

Tiefling

Touched by the Lower Planes, with one of three fiendish legacies. Abyssal tieflings often have horns, fur or tusks, infernal ones horns, spines, a tail and golden eyes, and chthonic ones a gaunt, ghostly look. Describe the legacy and the horn shape in Extra details.

Dragonborn example

Dragonborn

Wingless, bipedal dragons: scaly, bright-eyed and thick-boned, with horns on their heads. Draconic ancestry picks one of ten dragons, from black and blue to gold and silver, and sets the damage type of the breath weapon. From level 5, spectral wings let them fly for a short time. Match the scale color in Skin or scales.

Names and signatures

Name your adventurer, pick a signature

A good adventurer name sounds right shouted across a dungeon, and a signature item or spell is what the table remembers. Mix a name from a given name and a family name, then pick a signature for the class. Every click lands on your character in the generator.

Guide

How to create a D&D character picture

The best DnD character creator visual results show the build at a glance. The generator does the drawing; make these five calls first and you can create D&D character images for the whole party in one evening.

  1. 1

Start with species, because it sets the silhouette

Height, ears, horns, tails and scales are what people read first. A 3-foot halfling and a 7-foot orc need different framing, so choose the species before anything else.

  2. 2

Let the class decide the gear

A wizard needs a spellbook or staff, a cleric a holy symbol, a rogue light leather. One clear piece of class gear tells the table who they are before anyone reads the sheet.

  3. 3

Use the origin for the clothes under the armor

A noble's embroidered sleeves, a sailor's rope belt, a farmer's straw hat: the 2024 backgrounds are an easy way to make two fighters look nothing alike.

  4. 4

Make one signature item or spell visible

A sunburst that glows, a greataxe carved from a plow beam, a flute trailing light. One detail people can point at does more than five small ones.

  5. 5

Match the scene, then export for the table

Use the tavern or forest road for a story piece and Plain for a token. Set Output to Portrait to create D&D avatars for Discord or your virtual tabletop, then put the stats in D&D Beyond or on paper.
