Na'vi clans, bonds and roles, explained

The clan decides how your Na'vi looks, dresses and lives, and the bond decides how they move through Pandora. Pick one of each and the rest of the character falls into place.

Omatikaya, the forest clan example

Omatikaya, the forest clan

Jake Sully's adopted clan in the first film, from the rainforest around the Tree of Souls. They lived inside Hometree, a giant tree they call Kelutral, until the RDA brought it down, and other clans know them as master weavers. Young hunters climb the Hallelujah Mountains in a rite called Iknimaya to bond an ikran.

Metkayina, the reef clan example

Metkayina, the reef clan

The ocean clan that takes in the Sully family in The Way of Water. Metkayina have turquoise skin with rippled stripes, fin-like strakes on their forearms and wide paddle tails for swimming. They ride ilu, bond a skimwing as a rite of passage, and each one has a tulkun spirit brother or sister. Their tattoos record the story of a life.

Olangi, the horse clan example

Olangi, the horse clan

In the first film the horse clan of the plains rides into the final battle on direhorses, which the Na'vi call pa'li. Their leader Akwey answers Jake's call as Toruk Makto. A plains OC lives on the move, following the herds across open grassland, and rides better than most Na'vi walk.

Mangkwan, the Ash People example

Mangkwan, the Ash People

The volcano clan of Avatar: Fire and Ash. An eruption burned their Hometree a generation ago, and they turned away from Eywa toward fire. Led by Varang, they wear grey and white ash with red and black paint and raid other clans from the air. An Ash OC who still quietly listens for Eywa makes a strong story.

Tlalim, the Wind Traders example

Tlalim, the Wind Traders

Nomadic merchants also introduced in Fire and Ash, inspired by camel caravans on the old spice routes. Their airships float under jellyfish-like medusoids and are pulled by windrays, which a navigator steers through the bond. They carry goods and news between clans, stay out of wars and send outriders on ikran to guard the convoy.

Tsaheylu, the bond

Every Na'vi has a queue, a long braid with a neural link at its tip called the kuru. Joining it to a creature's queue makes tsaheylu, a bond that lets them share senses and steer without reins. A direhorse will carry many riders, but an ikran bonds with only one Na'vi in its life, so pick your OC's creature with care.

Tsahik and olo'eyktan

Most clans are led by two people: the olo'eyktan, who leads the hunt and the defense of the clan, and the tsahik, the spiritual leader who interprets the will of Eywa. Among the Omatikaya the two are usually mates. A tsahik trains a successor for years, so a young OC with spiritual gifts fits best as a tsahik in training.

Names and markings

Name your Na'vi, pick their markings

Na'vi names are a single word, built from the sounds of the language linguist Paul Frommer created for the films. Mix a name from two syllables, then pick the markings your Na'vi is known for. Every click goes straight onto your OC in the generator.

Guide

How to make a Na'vi OC

A strong Na'vi OC comes down to five decisions. This Na'vi OC creator handles the drawing; these are worth making first.

  1. 1

    Start with the clan

The clan sets almost everything else: skin tone, body shape, clothing and home. Forest Na'vi are blue with darker stripes, Metkayina are turquoise with strakes and paddle tails, and the Ash People wear grey ash and red paint. Pick one and design inside it.

  2. 2

Choose a bond that fits the home

A forest hunter climbs for an ikran, a reef kid earns a skimwing, a plains rider has a pa'li, and a Wind Trader navigator steers a windray. The creature tells fans where your OC grew up before they read a word.

  3. 3

    Give the markings a meaning

Stripes, glowing dots and paint are the Na'vi version of a signature look. Metkayina tattoos record a life, with the densest arm tattoos on deep-sea hunters, so let your OC's marks say something: a rite they passed, a song they keep, a raid they survived.

  4. 4

    Dress them for their clan

Every outfit on this site is a full outfit: a woven top and skirt or wrap for the forest, seagrass and shells for the reef, sailcloth for the Wind Traders, dark scorched wraps for the Ash People. Add one handmade detail, like a beaded songcord or a feather mantle, rather than copying a canon outfit.

  5. 5

Pick a name, a role and a problem

Na'vi names are one word, sometimes with an apostrophe for a short catch in the voice. Give your OC a role in the clan, like hunter, weaver or tsahik in training, and one problem to face: the RDA, a Mangkwan raid, or a bond that will not take.
