Monsters, human SOULs and places, explained

Monsters fill the Underground with many shapes and daily routines. Human SOUL colors have six named traits in the Snowdin Ball Game; red has no confirmed trait. ACT and MERCY make a character more than an outfit.

Moth monster example

Moth monster

An original moth monster can keep a lantern, fold its wings into a coat shape and worry about dark corners. Let a useful job and one small fear shape its ACT. A lantern keeper might know every safe turn through a cave yet hesitate at a deep pool. Put that contrast in the design: broad wings for shelter, a small light for guidance, and boots made for a damp path.

Frog monster example

Frog monster

A frog monster suits the Ruins or Waterfall, but its personality should do more than repeat a species joke. Try a raincoat, a hobby and a way to help a lost visitor. Bram counts drops from a leaky ceiling and keeps an umbrella handy. His round glasses, wide coat hem and orange canopy should still read when the drawing shrinks to a battle-sized sprite.

Pebble monster example

Pebble monster

A pebble monster can use its round form as a readable sprite shape. Place it along a snowy trail or a cavern path and give it a reason to meet travelers. Cairn marks the gentlest route through Snowdin. The moss tuft helps separate the head from the body, while mittens and boots show how a small creature handles the cold without changing its simple outline.

Ghost monster example

Ghost monster

Ghost monsters exist in Undertale, so a quiet original ghost fits. Give it its own cape, pastime and face rather than borrowing the cast’s music or clothing. A folded paper star gives Wisp a specific activity and a gift for a traveler. Keep the patchwork cape and pin visible in a small portrait, and use the expression to show shyness without making the design scary.

Skeleton monster example

Skeleton monster

A skeleton OC belongs in this world, but it needs an original build and outfit. Orin uses square glasses, a narrow skull and an ochre work coat. Keep the face, colors and job distinct from the famous skeleton brothers and fan AU designs. A sign painter can carry a ruler, ink and a route map instead of a weapon. Let the skeleton have a calm mouth and a practical posture rather than a fixed grin.

Human SOUL

The six named colors are light blue Patience, orange Bravery, blue Integrity, purple Perseverance, green Kindness and yellow Justice. Red appears too, but the game does not name a red trait. Use a color as story flavor, not as a fixed personality rule.

ACT and MERCY

In encounters, ACT offers choices beyond fighting, and MERCY lets a player spare a monster when the encounter allows it. Give your OC a specific nonviolent interaction, such as returning a dropped map or sharing a light.

Guide

How to make an Undertale OC

To create an Undertale character, start with one shape, one place and one ACT. These five decisions work for a monster or a human visitor.

  1. 1

    Choose monster or human

Make an Undertale character by deciding how it lives in the Underground. A monster needs a shape and daily routine; a human visitor needs a reason to listen to the people met along the way. Write one sentence about where they spend a normal afternoon. That ordinary detail will guide the clothes, the background and the first ACT a player might try.

  2. 2

Give the sprite one strong shape

Pixel art rewards a silhouette readable from far away. Use wings, a pebble outline, a raincoat or a distinctive coat hem. Keep the palette small. Cover the drawing with a solid color and check whether the shape still identifies the character. If two OCs become the same blob, change their proportions before adding tiny jewelry or more colors.

  3. 3

    Pick an Underground home

The Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland and New Home each suggest different weather, light and work. Put your OC somewhere a traveler could meet them. A Snowdin guide needs boots and a route through snow; a Waterfall lantern keeper needs a glow that survives damp caves. Tie the location to one practical clothing choice and one encounter action.

  4. 4

    Use SOUL colors carefully

For a human, choose one of the seven colors. The six named traits come from the Ball Game; avoid calling red Determination a confirmed canon trait. A color can suggest a question rather than dictate behavior. A patient person may still rush once in a while, and a brave one may need help. Leave room for choices that complicate the first impression.

  5. 5

Write an ACT and MERCY moment

A good Undertale monster OC has a response to kindness. Write one action the player could take, and how the character changes when spared. Keep the action concrete: straighten a sign, share an umbrella or wait for someone to finish a story. Then write a short reaction that reveals a new side of the character without needing a long backstory paragraph.
