Bell Toll Technique
Suzu no Ne, "the sound of a bell"
Seiji's cursed energy rides on the sound of a brass hand bell. Anything made of cursed energy that hears the toll stops for one beat, which is all the opening a patient first-year needs.
How it works
- The rule has one condition: the target must hear the toll. Curses, shikigami and cursed energy attacks in flight all count.
- Each freeze lasts one beat, about a second, and starts the moment the sound arrives.
- People hear an ordinary bell, so sorcerers and curse users keep moving; only their cursed energy stops.
Drawbacks
- A second ring before the echo fades cancels the first, and he rings twice when he is nervous.
- Rain, traffic or a loud crowd swallow the sound and shrink his range to a few steps.
- The freeze gives him an opening but no damage, so he still has to land every hit himself.
Binding vow
The red cord stays tied around his wrist for the whole fight. While the bell never leaves his hand, every freeze lasts two beats; if he lets go of it even once, the bell stays silent until sunrise.
Techniques
Still Beat
One clear ring timed between an enemy's attacks, so the freeze lands right as they commit.
Echo Lane
Rings as he runs, so the freeze rolls ahead of him and clears a hallway one beat at a time.
Stone Toll
Presses the bell to a wall or the floor so the toll travels through stone and reaches curses hiding behind it.
MaximumOne Hundred Eight Tolls
Rings 108 times in a few seconds, like a temple bell on New Year's Eve. Every curse in earshot stays frozen until the last echo fades, about ten seconds; then his arm goes numb and the bell will not ring until morning.
Domain Expansion
Sunset Bell Hall
Not mastered yet: for now it collapses after three tolls. Finished, it is a mountain temple at dusk with a great bronze bell, where the toll needs no air to travel, so every curse inside freezes on every strike.
