Bending arts, nations and eras, explained

Each nation is named for an element, and each bending art was first learned from the world around it. Only the Avatar can bend more than one element, so your OC bends one or none. Pick the art, then the nation and the era.

Waterbending example

Waterbending

The first waterbenders learned by watching the moon push and pull the tides, so waterbending is strongest at night and peaks under a full moon. It needs water nearby, which is why traveling waterbenders carry a water skin. Healing is a waterbending skill: in the Northern Water Tribe it was long the only waterbending taught to girls, and boys weren't allowed to learn it.

Earthbending example

Earthbending

Earthbenders learned from the badgermoles. The art is rooted and patient, strongest with both feet on the ground, and cut off inside a metal cell unless the bender can metalbend. The Earth Kingdom is the largest nation, from the walls of Ba Sing Se to the sandbenders of the Si Wong Desert.

Firebending example

Firebending

Firebending was learned from dragons, first by the ancient Sun Warriors. It comes from breath and inner heat, so extreme cold weakens it, and it is the only art that makes its own element. Lightning generation was once a skill of a few masters and needs a calm mind; by the Korra era firebenders generate lightning at Republic City power plants for a living.

Airbending example

Airbending

Airbenders learned from the flying bison and lived as nomads in four Air Temples until the Fire Nation wiped them out at the start of the war. The blue arrow tattoos are for masters only: an airbender earns them by mastering all 36 tiers or inventing a new technique. After Harmonic Convergence in the Korra era, some non-benders suddenly became airbenders and joined a new Air Nation.

Non-benders example

Non-benders

Plenty of people in the world cannot bend at all, and some of the best fighters in the series are non-benders. Chi-blocking, a run of quick jabs to pressure points, can stop a bender for a while and is mainly a non-bender skill. Swordsmen, warriors, inventors and pilots all fit here.

Two eras

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in the last year of the Hundred Year War, which Fire Lord Sozin started with the help of a comet. The Legend of Korra jumps 70 years ahead to Republic City, a 1920s-style city with cars, radio and pro-bending, a sport for teams of one waterbender, one earthbender and one firebender.

Sub-bending specialties

Some benders learn a rarer branch of their art. Waterbenders can heal or bend the water inside plants. Earthbenders can feel vibrations through the ground with seismic sense, bend sand or, very rarely, lava. Toph invented metalbending by sensing traces of earth in metal; by the Korra era it is the main tool of the Metalbending Police Force, though pure platinum cannot be bent.

Names and moves

Name your ATLA OC, pick a signature move

Canon names follow the cultures each nation draws on: Water Tribe names often come from Inuit words, Earth Kingdom names are mostly Chinese, Air Nomad names are mostly Tibetan, and Fire Nation names mix Japanese, Chinese and Mongolian. Mix a given name with a home, then pick a signature move. Every click goes straight onto your OC in the generator.

Guide

How to make an ATLA OC

Whether you call it an ATLA OC or an Avatar OC, five decisions do most of the work. Make them in this order to create an Avatar character Last Airbender fans will recognize as one of their own.

  1. 1

Choose a nation before an element

Where your OC grew up sets their clothes, their name and what their people expect of them. Most benders share their nation's element, so a mismatch is a story by itself: a waterbender raised in Ba Sing Se, or a Fire Nation kid who cannot bend at all.

  2. 2

Pick the era: the war or Republic City

In the Hundred Year War era the Air Nomads are gone and Fire Nation raids have left the Southern Water Tribe with almost no waterbenders, so the war shapes every choice. In the Korra era, 70 years later, your OC can ride in cars, listen to the radio and watch pro-bending in Republic City.

  3. 3

Give the bending one specialty and one weakness

Pick at most one sub-skill, like healing, metalbending or lightning, and keep a weakness from the series: waterbenders struggle far from water, earthbenders need their feet on the ground, and firebenders weaken in extreme cold.

  4. 4

Dress them in their nation's colors, not a hero's outfit

Use the nation's palette, then change the shapes. Skip the main cast's signatures: Katara's hair loops, Sokka's wolf tail, Toph's headband, Zuko's scar and topknot crown, Korra's hair tubes and Aang's arrows. A new hairstyle and one personal accessory go a long way.

  5. 5

Name them the way their nation would

Most of the cast go by one given name, and family names such as Beifong and Sato are the exception. Borrow from the culture the nation draws on, check that the name is not already a canon character, and try the name mixer above.
