Know the rules
Every toy in the factory came off a Playtime Co. line, from porcelain dolls to the plush critters of 1989. Decide what kind of Poppy Playtime toy OC you are making, then pick the era and the material.

Soft toys were Playtime Co.'s biggest hits. Huggy Wuggy, the company's most successful toy, came out in 1984 as a long-limbed blue plush with Velcro on his hands so a hug would stick. Kissy Missy followed in 1985 with the same design in pink, plus eyelashes and a blue bow.

Poppy, the porcelain doll the game is named after, is based on the first toy Playtime Co. ever made and has a pull-string in her back. Later dolls include Miss Delight, the teacher of the Playcare school, and Lily Lovebraids from Chapter 5, whose braids move on their own. A doll OC gets a painted face instead of a stitched one.

Many lines were sold around one face that went on the box, the posters and the cardboard cutouts. Bron the red dinosaur dates from 1961, Boxy Boo the jack-in-the-box from 1966 and Candy Cat from 1979, and Playcare still has cutouts of Bron and Bunzo Bunny. A mascot OC needs a simple shape that reads from across the lobby.

Launched in 1989 with a Saturday cartoon, the Smiling Critters are small plush animals with a wide toothless smile, a zipper down the chest, a calming scent and a charm pendant for their personality: a sun for DogDay, a heart for Bobby BearHug, a lightning bolt for Hoppy Hopscotch. CatNap was recalled after some of his plushes let out Red Smoke instead of lavender. The darker Nightmare Critters line added toothy grins and grumpy brows.

Behind the toy aisles, Playtime Co. ran the Bigger Bodies Initiative, which made giant living versions of its toys and gave each one a number: Huggy Wuggy is Experiment 1170, CatNap is 1188 and Mommy Long Legs is 1222. Experiments tower over the player and stretch, squeeze or climb in ways a shelf toy never could. Keep yours cute-creepy, with long limbs and an odd smile rather than teeth and claws.
Elliot Ludwig founded Playtime Co. in 1930, and the factory went quiet in 1995, ten years before the game. That leaves more than sixty years of toys: 1950s porcelain, Yarnaby's 1970s rainbow yarn, 1980s plush bestsellers and 1990s cartoon tie-ins. The era sets your palette and how worn the toy looks.
Not every toy reached the shelves. Chapter 2 has a Rejected Room full of toys that never went on sale, and the Wrongside Outimals, a 1990s line of reversible plush, were dropped after a focus group of parents called them unsuitable for children. A rejected or recalled toy comes with a backstory built in.
Names and quirks
Playtime Co. names are made to be said out loud: Huggy Wuggy rhymes, Bunzo Bunny and Boxy Boo repeat a sound. Mix a name from a cuddly word and an animal word, then pick the quirk or gadget your toy is known for. Every click goes straight onto your toy in the generator.

Guide
Custom Poppy Playtime characters that fans remember come down to five choices. The Poppy Playtime OC creator handles the drawing; these are worth deciding first.
A shelf plush, a porcelain doll, a box-art mascot, a pocket-size critter and a giant experiment live very different stories. The type sets the size, how it moves and how the player first meets it, so pick it before anything else.
Playtime Co. made toys from 1930 until the factory closed in 1995. A 1950s toy has faded paint and porcelain, a 1980s one is bright plush and a 1990s cartoon tie-in leans on neon. Canon toys mix materials too: Yarnaby is made of yarn and Doey the Doughman of clay.
The canon toys already cover a cat, a dog, a bear, a pig, a rabbit, an elephant, a chicken, a unicorn, a lion, a spider and two dinosaurs. A mole, a possum, a giraffe or a snail gives your OC its own silhouette. If you do pick a cat or a dog, avoid purple and orange so it does not read as CatNap or DogDay.
Canon toys have one trick each: Huggy's Velcro hands, a Critter's scent and pendant, Poppy's pull-string. Pick one quirk, then a name that rhymes or repeats a sound, the way Huggy Wuggy, Kissy Missy and Boxy Boo do.
Some toys help the player, like Kissy Missy and the toys sheltering in the Safe Haven; others stay loyal to the Prototype. Write one line on where your toy was found in the factory and whether it would hand the player a battery or hide it.
