Cutie mark types, explained

A cutie mark is the picture on a pony's flank that shows their special talent. The first toys simply called them symbols, and the name cutie mark arrived with the third generation. Friendship is Magic made them part of the story. These are the kinds of marks the show uses, and how to design your own.

Literal marks example

Literal marks

The mark shows the job itself. Davenport, who sells quills and sofas, wears a quill and a sofa, and Applejack's three apples point straight at the family orchard. Literal marks read at a glance and are the easiest kind to design.

Symbolic marks example

Symbolic marks

The mark stands for an idea instead of a tool. Cheerilee's three smiling flowers show her wish that her students bloom and be happy. A symbolic mark gives your OC a story to tell, so keep the object simple and the meaning clear.

One bold object example

One bold object

A single shape with a strong outline, like Big McIntosh's half apple or Princess Celestia's sun. It stays readable on a flank, a badge or a tiny avatar, so it suits a talent that is one clear thing.

Two-object pairs example

Two-object pairs

Two objects tell a small story: a tool and what it makes, or a thing and where it belongs. Trixie's wand and crescent moon is the best-known canon pair. Put the main object in front and keep the second one smaller.

Three of a kind example

Three of a kind

The Friendship is Magic signature. Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie all wear three matching objects in only two colors. Three in a triangle looks balanced on a flank, but fans also read it as main-cast style, so change the shape or the colors to keep yours original.

Color logic example

Color logic

Most canon marks use one to three colors, and Rainbow Dash is a rare exception with four in her lightning bolt. Pick one main color and one accent, and make sure at least one of them stands out against your pony's coat, or the mark disappears on the flank.

Earned, not chosen example

Earned, not chosen

Foals are born with a blank flank, and the mark appears when they discover what sets them apart. Magic cannot force one. The Cutie Mark Crusaders kept searching until season 5 and earned matching shield marks in 2015, and G5's Misty earned hers in 2023. A mark that arrives at a turning point, like the night a filly first saved a torn book, makes a better backstory than one picked from a list.

Names and marks

Pony names and cutie mark ideas

Every mark needs a pony, and every pony needs a mark. Mix a name from a color or plant word and a talent word, then pick one of ten cutie mark ideas. Names go onto the sheet card; marks go straight into Special talent.

Guide

How to design a cutie mark

Five steps that work with this My Little Pony cutie mark maker or with a pencil. The generator does the drawing; these are the choices that make a mark look like it belongs to one pony.

  1. 1

Write the talent as something your pony does

"Fixing clocks" or "reading the wind" gives you objects to draw; "being nice" does not. Type it into Special talent, and the generator builds the symbol around it.

  2. 2

    Decide: literal or symbolic

A literal mark shows the tool or the result, like a rolling pin for a baker. A symbolic mark shows a meaning, like flowers for a teacher who wants her students to bloom. Literal is easier to read; symbolic gives you a story.

  3. 3

Use one, two or three objects

One bold object reads best at small sizes, a pair tells a story, and three in a triangle is the classic show look. Set Number of objects and Arrangement, and leave the rest of the space empty.

  4. 4

Pick two colors that fit your pony's coat

Choose a main color and one accent, and make sure one of them contrasts with the coat. Then shrink the result to thumbnail size: if you can still tell what it is, it will read on the flank.

  5. 5

Check it against canon, then give it a pony

Avoid a six-pointed star with sparkles, three apples, three diamonds, three butterflies, balloons and a rainbow lightning bolt, or fans will read your OC as a main character. When the mark is done, describe it in the MLP OC creator to draw the whole pony.
