This free dragon OC creator draws your dragon from the choices you make. Pick a body type, from a four-legged western dragon to a wingless eastern dragon, a wyvern or a draconequus, then choose an element, a role, two colors and what your dragon hoards, and get your dragon OC as finished art.

Ideas
Stuck on a dragon? Load one of these into the generator, then change the body type, the element or the hoard until the dragon feels like yours.

Art styles
Emberlyn, a western fire dragon who hoards old maps, drawn five ways by this dragon OC creator from the same description. Switch the art style in the generator to do the same with your dragon, or set Output to Ref sheet for front, side and back views of the wings and tail.

Know the rules
Folklore has no single dragon. The body type decides how your dragon moves, flies and fits into a scene, so pick it first and add the element and the hoard after.
Sources: Chinese dragon (Wikipedia); European dragon (Wikipedia); Beowulf, chapter 32 (Standard Ebooks)

The dragon of European legend: a scaly, horned, lizard-like body on four legs, a separate pair of leathery bat-like wings and a long tail. It guards gold in a cave or castle, and the dragon in Beowulf already breathes fire. Six limbs make it the hardest type to pose, so let the generator handle the anatomy.

The Chinese lóng: a serpentine body on four short legs, a mane, whiskers and stag-like antlers, and usually no wings. It flies by magic, rules rivers, seas and rain, and often holds a flaming pearl. Five claws marked the emperor in Ming and Qing China; Japanese dragons usually have three.

Two legs and two wings, with no front legs. Heraldry has told the wyvern apart from the four-legged dragon since the late Middle Ages, and the word goes back to the Latin for viper. With no arms in the way, it suits lean, fast sky dragons and couriers.

A winged serpent from European heraldry: a long coiling body, a pair of wings and no legs at all. The name means two-winged, and old descriptions give it feathers the colors of a sunrise. The Feathered Serpent of Mesoamerica, Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs and Kukulkan to the Maya, is a cousin worth reading about.

Stands and walks like a person, with hands, clothes and usually a job. D&D's dragonborn are the best-known example: dragon-headed people who became a core player race in 4th edition. Build a dragonborn adventurer in the D&D character creator, and any other upright dragon here.

A baby dragon just out of the egg: an oversized head and eyes, stubby wings, soft scales and horns that are only nubs. It is the easiest way to make a cute dragon OC, and it can grow up: draw the same OC as an adult later and keep the markings.

A word Lauren Faust coined for Discord in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, from the Greek drakon (dragon) and the Latin equus (horse). In the show it means a creature with the head of a pony and a body made of all sorts of other animals. For your own draconequus OC, mix parts Discord does not have, like a fox tail or a moth wing.
Names and hoards
Dragon names often join two words into one, like a nature word and a dragon word. Mix a name from the two banks, then choose what your dragon hoards: gold is the classic, but a stranger hoard says more about the character. Every click goes straight onto your dragon in the generator.

Guide
Every OC dragon starts with a silhouette and ends with a story. The generator handles the drawing; these five choices are worth making first.
Four legs and wings, a wingless serpent, two legs and wings, or upright like a person: the body type sets the silhouette, how your dragon flies and what it can hold. Decide it first, because the horns, colors and gear all hang on it.
An element should show on the body, not only in the breath: frost on an ice dragon's scales, an ember glow in a fire dragon's throat, gemstone spikes along a crystal dragon's spine. One element reads better than three.
Pick a main scale color and a second color for the wings or mane, then add one marking in Extra details, like a pale belly, a chipped horn or freckles across the snout. Color has carried meaning for a long time: the imperial dragon was red under the Ming and gold under the Qing.
A hoard is the fastest way to show personality. The dragon in Beowulf noticed a single stolen cup, so a hoard is something a dragon knows down to the last piece. Gold says proud; old maps, teacups or seeds say curious, gentle or patient.
A pocket-sized companion, a rider's partner and a mountain guardian live very different lives. Pick a role and a background to match, then name your dragon last. Dragon names are often compound words, so search the Wings of Fire wiki to check that yours is not taken.
